Corporate sibling Facebook Messenger added voice messaging in January 2013.

Joshua March, CEO of customer-engagement platform Conversocial, said, “Adding voice messaging support to Direct chats is reflective of Instagram’s growth to become a comprehensive and possible stand-alone messaging platform … This is especially exciting considering that it is launching business messaging next year.”
