International Women’s Day Was the Most-Talked-About Moment on Facebook in 2018

Over 383 million soccer fans discussed 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia

International Women’s Day (March 8) was 2018’s most-talked-about moment on Facebook.

Research manager Sheida Neman revealed in a blog post that conversation was generated by women and men, and “a wide range of topics, issues and causes related to women” were discussed, not just the day itself.

After the school shooting in Parkland, Fla., survivors announced the March for Our Lives movement Feb. 18, and Facebook said more than 1 million people showed interest in attending a Facebook event for the movement and over $2.5 million was raised through Fundraisers on the social network.

Facebook said the top moments in 2018 for conversations about voting and changes in local government were the presidential election in Brazil Oct. 7 and the U.S. midterm elections Nov. 6.

2018 FIFA World Cup Russia spurred 2.3 billion posts, comments, Reactions and shares from over 383 million soccer fans, and Neman wrote that two of the most-discussed moments of the year came from the tournament: France winning the title July 15 and the semifinal match between England and Croatia July 11.

Super Bowl LII also heated up the social network, with more than 62 million people discussing the Philadelphia Eagles’ victory over the New England Patriots and the halftime performance by Justin Timberlake, which paid tribute to the late Prince.

A different prince also drew quite a bit of attention on Facebook in 2018, as 42 million people posted about the Royal Wedding between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle May 19.

The late Nelson Mandela would have turned 100 July 18, and Neman said, “Millions of people came to Facebook to celebrate Mandela’s life of dedication to human rights and social justice.”

And millions of posts were shared on Facebook in memory of those who were lost in 2018, including Aretha Franklin, Avicii, Dolores O’Riordan, Stephen Hawking, Anthony Bourdain and Burt Reynolds.

Finally, Facebook announced that starting Dec. 10, individual users may start seeing personalized Year in Review videos in their News Feeds, containing special moments from 2018 that they have shared or been tagged in.
