Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim’s name has been thrown in among those evidently looking to buy Newsweek.
Not only did the mogul recently double his stake in the New York Times Co. to 14 percent — making Slim the company’s largest independent shareholder — he also recently paid a visit to Newsweek‘s offices. As you might have heard, the Washington Post Co. announced earlier this week that it was placing the weekly news magazine up for sale, and reports abounded that Newsweek editor Jon Meacham was gathering financiers in order to place his own bid on the struggling weekly.
Slim’s visit is particularly interesting in light of Meacham’s recent comment that “two billionaires” had called him to express interest in purchasing Newsweek. However, according to the NY Post sources “familiar with” the proceedings say Slim was not one of those two billionaires.
