Joanna Coles, the chief content officer of Hearst Magazines, is stepping down, The New York Post reported today.
Hearst did not return multiple requests for comment.
Coles is expected to leave the company next week.
Her departure comes on the heels of Troy Young’s appointment to Hearst Magazine’s president. Young, who led the company’s digital team for years, succeeded David Carey, who announced he was stepping down in June.
As chief content officer, her role butted up against Young’s.
Coles came to the United States to lead the New York bureau for the Guardian in 1997 and joined Hearst in 2006 as editor in chief of Marie Claire. She was named editor of Cosmopolitan six years later. A two–time winner of Adweek’s Hot List Editor of the Year, she recently published a book on relationships in the digital era.
In 2016, she was promoted to chief content officer, a new position at the company.
At the time, she was praised as editor of Cosmopolitan magazine reimagining the brand, which included more coverage of news and political events and expanding the title onto Snapchat Discover.
“Joanna is a powerhouse modern editor—she has strengthened the thought leadership of Cosmopolitan and established deep relationships with major players in advertising, technology, entertainment and government,” then-Hearst Magazines president David Carey said at the time.
