Remember that rumor about former Obama White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs joining Facebook? The idea was right—but it was the wrong press secretary. Instead, Facebook confirmed Tuesday that Joe Lockhart, who was press secretary under President Bill Clinton, will join Facebook July 15 as vice president of global communications.
In his new position, Lockhart will manage Facebook's corporate, policy, and international communications based at Facebook headquarters in Palo Alto, Calif. He'll report to Elliott Schrage, vice president of global communications, marketing, and public policy.
Lockhart, who has had experience managing a 24/7 news cycle and controversy, will have his work cut out for him defending Facebook, which has had more than its share of scrutiny in the press and on Capitol Hill for privacy issues.
"His experience building and running a press office at the White House gives him particular appreciation for the demands of a global 24-hour news cycle and the challenges of responding effectively to intense scrutiny," Schrage said in a statement.
Lockhart is the founder of Glover Park Group, a Washington, D.C.-based communications firm. He has also worked for CNN, NBC News, and Sky Television of London.
