Julia Ioffe Cut From Politico After ‘Tasteless, Offensive Tweet’

"I am truly and deeply sorry."

Incoming Atlantic reporter Julia Ioffe has had her Politico contributor contract ended early after editors caught wind of a tweet she sent Wednesday afternoon. It read, “Either Trump is fucking his daughter or he’s shirking nepotism laws. Which is worse?”

Ioffe deleted the tweet and apologized: “I do regret my phrasing and apologize for it. It was a crass joke that I genuinely regret. It was a tasteless, offensive tweet that I regret and have deleted. I am truly and deeply sorry. It won’t happen again. Good night. Tomorrow will be worse.”

Politico editors Carrie Budoff Brown and John Harris sent a note to staff last night addressing the issue: “POLITICO journalists are representing the publication at all times and on all platforms, and must present themselves accordingly. Gratuitous opinion has no place, anywhere, at any time – not on your Facebook feed, your Twitter feed or any place else. It has absolutely zero value for our readers and should have zero place in our work.”
