Gustavo Arellano to Help KCRW Consider All Things Orange County

All that’s left now is for KCRW to officially find room for Madeleine Brand and the circle of KPCC irony will be complete.

That’s because OC Weekly editor Gustavo Arellano (pictured), newly announced as a weekly contributor to KCRW’s end of All Things Considered, was reportedly one of the candidates earlier this year for the KPCC slot briefly assumed alongside Brand by A Martinez. Yes, it’s a small LA radio world.

From today’s announcement:

“KCRW was looking for someone who could shine a bright light on this sprawling, diverse and vitally important region of Southern California, and we are happy to have Gustavo as a guide,” says Gary Scott, news program director at KCRW. “Gustavo is smart, he’s dogged, he’s funny… and he’s occasionally outrageous – but he’s more passionate and plugged in than just about anyone you’ll ever meet.”

“Orange County is virtually virgin territory in the Southern California media landscape, and my colleagues at the OC Weekly and I have been a lone voice in the wilderness proclaiming its glories and controversies for years,” said Gustavo Arellano. “I’m thrilled that KCRW has assigned me to be their guide to this strange land, especially after having collaborated with them for years on Good Food.”

Arellano’s All Things Considered debut is scheduled for Monday December 10. He first started contributing to Good Food back in 2005 and will continue to do so.

Update – 12/06/12: Arellano has provided some additional details about his forthcoming All Things Considered segments and the broader partnership between the station and OC Weekly:

My weekly rants won’t be scripted pieces, but rather four-minute conversations with the KCRW news anchor on whatever the big story is in OC that particular week, with” occasional” forays into DESMADRE–did I say occasional? I meant “constant”!…

In addition, I’m going to work with KCRW to get Weekly stories and reporters on the airwaves–we’re going to be the Cabeza de Vacas for KCRW so they can sonically conquer our wildlands. And I might even do some stories myself, once I learn how to work that fancy Marantz recorder I bought years ago but never bothered to learn how to use.
