Because more of us are traveling with portable electronic devices like the Apple iPad, one may wonder whether you need to take your brand new iPad out of your carry on bag for airport security screening like you do with laptop computer. Fortunately, the TSA Blog has a clear answer to the question:
“Electronic items smaller than the standard sized laptop should not need to be removed from your bag or their cases. It’s that simple.”
The one possible piece of ambiguity is the definition of a “standard sized laptop.” I think most people would consider laptops with 14 inch screens or larger to be standard sized. When I have traveled with my Asus 1000HE Eee PC that has a 10 inch screen, I have not removed it from my carry on bag and I have never been asked by TSA to remove it. The TSA blog post does rightly point out that if an officer needs a closer look, the bag will be subject to a second screening that usually involves removing the contents of the bag.
