Kindle Worlds, Fan Fiction Store, Now Open

Amazon has opened the Kindle Worlds store and launched a self-service submission platform for the fan fiction outlet. The stories are on sale for between around $0.99 and $3.99.

Last month, Amazon introduced Kindle Worlds as a place for fans to create and share fiction involving their favorite characters from other works. At launch, the store includes more than 50 stories including a few commissioned by Amazon such as Pretty Little Liars: Stained by Barbra Annino. Readers can shop by the original work, so for example, if you’d like to read Gossip Girl fan fiction, you can search for all related fan fiction in the category, which currently has 6 stories. The page also includes links to purchase DVD collections of the TV show.

Amazon has licenses for Gossip GirlPretty Little Liars, and Vampire Diaries, as well as for Hugh Howey’s Silo Saga, Barry Eisler’s John Rain novels, Blake Crouch’s Wayward Pines Series, and the Foreworld Saga by Neal Stephenson. They also hold licenses for the Worlds of Valiant superhero comic book series Bloodshot, X-O ManowarArcher & ArmstrongHarbinger, and Shadowman.

Writers that use the platform can earn a 35% royalty rate from net revenues for works at least 10,000 words. Amazon Publishing is also piloting a new program for  short works which run between 5,000 and 10,000 words. These short stories, which are typically priced less than $1, Amazon will pay the royalties for the World’s rights holder and pay authors a digital royalty of 20%.
