The year isn’t that far along, but 2011 has already brought some kinda, sorta good news for LA’s film industry. Local filming is up 4.7% in the first quarter. That’s obviously the good news for a city that has been bleeding production jobs, as states like Louisiana have offered lucrative tax breaks to lure in the film industry. The state offers 35% tax deductions for filming expenses, while California only offers 25%, and doesn’t allow big budget pictures to write anything off. Not surprisingly, sad as it may be, Battle: Los Angeles was actually filmed in New Orleans.
And that’s the bad news: while filming is up in LA, feature and television shoots are down–5.3% and 3.7% respectively. We are getting more student films and music videos, however. So…er… glass half full!
