LA Times editor Russ Stanton told staffers yesterday the paper is adopting a program started at the Chicago Tribune to put e-commerce links in stories, LA Observed is reporting. The links will appear in green, and stories that carry them will feature disclaimers.
According to a memo from Stanton to staffers, the program has been underway at the Tribune for six months. The Times will test out the links in the Health, Image, Food, Travel, Books, Entertainment and Sports sections. During the test period, they won’t appear in news stories, columns, and blogs.
The program’s objective, according to Stanton? “These post-publication links to sites such as Amazon and TicketNetwork will serve as both a reader service and a revenue opportunity for the company.”
