Meryl Streep Jokes About ‘Devil Wears Prada,’ Justin Timberlake Charms at FGI’s Night of Stars

Meryl delights, as usual, and JT practices his inevitable Oscars hosting gig.

Fashion and movie stars alike came out to shine last night at The Fashion Group International’s annual Night of Stars awards ceremony. Held again this year at Cipriani Wall Street, the event honored both established designers (Alber Elbaz for Lanvin earned the night’s Superstar Award) and celebrities like Justin Timberlake, recipient of the Lord & Taylor Fashion Oracle Award, who with childhood friend Trace Ayala forayed into fashion in 2006 with his William Rast line.

Host Simon Doonan, author and style columnist for Slate, lobbed a few witticisms at the fashion choices of Silicon Valley entrepreneurs. Speaking to Technology Innovation honoree Evan Sharp of Pinterest, Doonan joked, “Thank you for not wearing a hoodie.” Meanwhile, Allison Williams, who presented the Retail Trailblazer Award to eBay’s Marcelle Parrish, defended new hubby Ricky Van Veen, co-founder of CollegeHumor, for being “guilty of that aforementioned hoodie style.”

Another highlight was a performance by YouTuber Tori Kelly, who blew away the crowd with her rendition of Timberlake’s “Suit & Tie.” This was followed by JT’s acceptance speech, which included a dig at the venue’s main course (he wasn’t a fan of the lamb) and a good amount of self-deprecating humor (“I always knew when I was 17 years old and my hair looked like ramen noodle, and I was wearing strings attached to my hands when I was in a boy group I was probably going to win some kind of fashion award some day.”). He even quoted former model (“this will be the only time that I quote a supermodel”) and frequent Vogue cover girl Lauren Hutton when he said, “Fashion is what you’re offered four times a year by the designers. And style is what you choose.”

The venerable Meryl Streep was also on hand to present Elbaz with his award. In another clever line of the night, Streep claimed, “I know very little about fashion. I don’t know how I got in that movie,” referring to her notable role in The Devil Wears Prada. No doubt Anna Wintour herself would have smiled at that one.

Star honorees also included Jason Wu (who received his award from Diane Kruger); Bruno Frisoni for Roger Vivier (presented by Katie Holmes); Jonathan Anderson; Karyn Khoury, senior vp of corporate fragrance development for Estée Lauder; Karen Harvey; Daniel Paltridge for Bulgari (presenter was Glenda Bailey); George Yabu and Glenn Pushelberg; and Eileen Fisher.
