Mocked for being a pitchman

Montel Williams, the talk-show host turned pitchman, stepped in it during the wee hours of the morning on Twitter.

Just after 2 a.m. today, Williams tweeted at civil rights activist Deray McKesson the following message:

Since then, "Montel Williams" has been a national trending topic on Twitter, with many people sarcastically using the hashtag #MontelWilliamsLogic. Williams' attempt to call out McKesson appears to be in response to the McKesson's recent appearance on Sean Hannity's Fox News show.

As The Root first reported, fellow African Americans on Twitter immediately took Williams to task, sometimes chastising him for serving as the corporate mouthpiece for a payday loan service. The King Center, the official living memorial for Dr. Martin Luther King, was among the first to respond.

McKesson reacted with this tweet.

And as often happens on Twitter, reactions here or there got harsh.

Williams was still contending with the backlash this morning on Twitter.
