Movie lovers who have longed for a place to watch all their favorite movies online, subscription-free, while interacting with their friends, sharing reviews and recommendations, sharing discounts and more will be happy to hear about flickme. Founded by former Funny Or Die COO Mitch Galbraith, former Funny Or Die VP of Product and Engineering Mark Smallcombe, and Mark Kvamme, flickme lets you find and watch movies on demand with no subscriptions and no commercials.
Hollywood hit rentals start from $2.99 and new releases rent for $3.99, but the coolest part is that films recommended by your friends come at a discount. If at least one friend has rented a film at the regular price, you get it for $1.49! They’re calling it “Friends with benefits!” According to the flickme about page, “About one third of the movies on flickme feature pass-along perks: the first person to rent or buy can share special offers with friends, including discounts and access to rentals before they are normally available.”
Flickme also offers fun exclusive rewards and badges. “In addition to obtaining discounts from friends, you an earn leaderboard points and collect badges based on your activity on flickme. For instance, you can earn the Adam Sandler badge by watching five movies starring Adam Sandler.” Can you guess which of the badges below is the Adam Sandler badge? Here, I’ll give you a hint: Happy Gilmore.
Mitch Galbraith, CEO of flickme, told the Hollywood Reporter, “We’ve built a short cut to find all the movies you’ll love. We’re assembling a library of thousands of top Hollywood titles and enabling highly personalized recommendations from close friends to ensure every movie you watch on flickme is a winner.”
Galbraith left Funny Or Die last year to start this new venture, and it sounds incredibly promising. These days more and more people are watching movies online, but many don’t want to sign up for a subscription service like Netflix or Hulu Plus. I like that you don’t have to subscribe to flickme—you can just rent and buy movies on demand. And I also think the discounts between friends are a great added benefit that will help flickme grow to massive proportions.
