Nathan Lump announced to staff today that he’s stepping down after four years as editor in chief of Travel + Leisure.
“I really thought I accomplished what I came in to do,” Lump said. “I like challenging myself professionally … It felt like the right time to make the change.”
In 2014, Lump was tasked with modernizing the magazine (now 47 years old) and expanding its digital presence. Under Lump’s direction, travelandleisure.com has grown to almost 10 million monthly unique views. Adweek has named the title as the hottest travel magazine every year since 2015.
Travel + Leisure publisher Jay Meyer said it had been a “really amazing four years.”
“We generally enjoy travelling together, and talking travel and business has made it very special,” Meyer said.
Lump joined Travel + Leisure as editor in 2014 after serving as director of branded content at Condé Nast. Lump began new franchises at the magazine, such as naming a Destination of the Year and introducing themed issues.
“We will miss Nathan’s extraordinary creative talent and energy, and we thank him for his inspired leadership,” said Stephen Orr, vp, group editorial director of Meredith, in a statement. “I’m very pleased that he will work with me to find his successor.”
Meredith inherited Travel + Leisure earlier this year when it acquired Time Inc.
Meredith announced last month that it would make a series of structural changes, including combine EatingWell and Cooking Light, only printing the latter magazine as a special issue on newsstands.
Lump insists that his decision to leave isn’t related to the magazine’s new owners, just that it’s time for something new, which—of course, after some travel—is still to be determined.
