Neal Carruth gets a new role at NPR, as general manager of podcasting. This is a first of its kind role at NPR in which Carruth will be responsible for an expanding group of podcasts that currently includes Planet Money, Embedded, Hidden Brain, Code Switch, Pop Culture Happy Hour and the Politics podcast.
“He will support the teams working on those shows, strengthen connections between our podcast portfolio and the newsroom and member stations, and support innovation and new program development across NPR,” wrote NPR vp for programming and audience development Anya Grundmann and Chris Turpin, vp of news programming and operations, in a memo to staff.
Carruth has been with NPR for 17 years, most recently as supervising senior editor of the business desk.
“All the various elements of my career path feed into everything I’m doing here. I’ve been an editor. I’ve been a producer. I’ve worked at a member station. And I don’t take any of that for granted, either,” he told Poynter’s Benjamin Mullin in an interview.
Another thing Carruth isn’t taking for granted is NPR’s stable of talent, telling Mullin, “I’ve seen up close the talent war that the podcasting boom has created. And you’ve got to be really smart and you’ve got to be on offense. You’ve got to know who your most talented people are and keep them creatively fulfilled.”
Carruth begins his new role in late November.
