When Netflix went international last summer, bringing streaming service to Canada, the first question on the minds of many international online video fanatics was “where will Netflix be heading next?” Well rumor has it that Netflix has some new international launches on the horizon. It could be only a matter of time before Netflix is streaming in Britain, Mexico and Brazil.
Ben Fritz of the LA Times writes that, “According to entertainment industry insiders, Netflix executives have said they plan to expand soon to Latin America—with Mexico and Brazil considered particularly promising markets—and Britain.” Netflix declined to comment on their plans for international launches. However, their successful launch in Canada makes an increase in their international offerings a clear next step for Netflix, if they want to continue to grow and expand.
Netflix has already dominated Hollywood. They are currently the largest paid service to offer a huge library of television shows and movies online for streaming. But this domination doesn’t come without a price. They are often blamed for bankrupting and destroying Blockbuster and for taking viewers away from networks and DVD rental distributors, and many big networks, HBO included, refuse to provide them with content. But the Catch-22 for networks and distributors is that as Netflix continues to grow it will be hard to ignore them. Netflix has got a major hold on the industry that has things looking bleak for competition.
Brian Fritz writes, “Observers believe that once Netflix surpasses 30 million subscribers—a goal that analysts say the company could achieve as soon as 2012—it may become difficult to unseat the Los Gatos company.” Of course, expansion into Latin America and Britain will only serve to broaden Netflix’s reach, making them even more difficult to compete with. Although Netflix has a number of smaller competitors in the United States—including Hulu, Amazon.com’s Prime Instant Videos, Wal-Mart’s Vudu, and Best Buy’s CinemaNow—most of these services are not offered internationally.
