New York Times Opening Bureaus in Phoenix and Kansas City

Go west, young journalists — The New York Times plans on opening bureaus in Phoenix and Kansas City, according to a Friday report by Bloomberg:

The newspaper plans to name correspondents to the new offices by summer’s end, according to the memo, co-written by national editor Rick Berke and deputy national editor Adam Bryant. Times Co. spokesman Robert Christie confirmed the memo in an interview.

New York-based Times Co. closed its Kansas City bureau in 1992, Berke and Bryant said.

Christie declined to comment beyond the memo.

We’ll be on the lookout for whether these bureaus consist of a few hired hands, a full-bore editorial posse, or just a few varmint-chasing snake peddlers.
