News Corp.’s UK Papers Unleash the Paywall

News International, a subsidiary of News Corp. and publisher of the UK’s Times and Sunday Times, has, as anticipated, launched a subscription service for those two papers today.

Registered users get access to the site free for eight weeks, and then the fees start kicking in — one pound sterling per day or two quid per week for access to both the Times and the Sunday Times.

We’ll be following closely to see how the move impacts the UK papers, as it could foreshadow the results from The New York Times‘ paywall, which is slated for January 2011.
