Newspapers may be struggling to monetize their online versions, but they’re doing just fine with increasing Web traffic.
The number of unique visitors to newspaper Web sites in the top 25 markets grew 10 percent from March to April, reaching 83.7 million, according a Newspaper National Network analysis of data from comScore Media Metrix. In the top 10 markets, unique visitors during the same period surged nearly 13 percent, reaching 70.8 million.
Since the beginning of the year, unique visitors grew 15 percent each in the top 25 and top 10 markets.
Page views are also on the rise. In the top 25 markets, they hit 2 billion, up 11 percent between March and April. In the top 10 markets, views improved 16 percent to $1.4 billion.
“Newspaper Web sites delivered 2 billion page views in the top 25 markets in April, a new record,” said Jason Klein, president and CEO of the Newspaper National Network. “When compared to the HuffingtonPost, newspaper sites in the top 25 markets delivered more than five times the page views and more than four times the unique visitors.”
