Newsweek is formalizing integration of its print and online editorial operations, expanding Mark Miller’s editorial director role to include oversight for digital content.
Under the new structure, print and Web journalists will report to Miller, who in turn will report to editor Jon Meacham and Geoff Reiss, vp, general manager, Newsweek Digital.
The org-chart changes come as Newsweek.com prepares for a redesign later in April.
“The future requires an ever-closer collaboration between our journalists, and no one is better suited to lead the integration of our editorial operations than Mark Miller, the magazine’s tireless and devoted editorial director,” Meacham said in a memo to staff.
Miller replaces Devin Gordon, Newsweek’s digital editor, who is returning to the print world. He’ll be a senior editor at Condé Nast’s GQ magazine.
Along with Miller, Meacham’s No. 2, managing editor Dan Klaidman, also will add responsibility for digital.
Chief executive Tom Ascheim has been shifting in resources to the Web as Newsweek struggles in print, with pages down 20 percent to 242 this year through the April 12 issue, per the Mediaweek Monitor. To save money, parent Washington Post Co. is moving the staff out of its new Tribeca offices back to Midtown.
