NJ Hires Golden LAT Reporter

NJ is excited to announce another outside the Beltway hire. It’s LAT‘s lead state budget reporter Shane Goldmacher, who they discovered in last summer’s nationwide talent search (a little like American Idol, but slightly more wonky). He will be a new Congressional correspondent. We’re already lining up Separated at Birth possibilities, but they are under wraps for now.

Welcome to the Fishbowl Shane!

See NJ Editor-in-Chief Ron Fournier’s remarks that include a ringing endorsement of their new hire from WaPo‘s Chris Cillizza…

Great news: Shane Goldmacher, the Los Angeles Times’ lead state budget reporter based in Sacramento, is joining NJ as a Congressional correspondent.
Shane is “one that got away,” a rising young talent we recruited last summer after his name kept popping up during the NJ talent search. We were impressed by his clips, his in-person interview and the many raves from references. But he opted to stay in Sacramento. Ready now to move to DC, Shane will help bolster both our congressional and economic coverage – two cores of our business.
Shane has covered California’s ongoing fiscal crisis, an asset as he helps NJ cover the mess here in Washington. He also covered the 2010 governor’s race and contributed regularly to the online PolitiCal blog. Before joining the paper in 2009, he wrote for the Sacramento Bee and Capitol Weekly of Sacramento. Chris Cillizza named Shane one of the best state-based political reporters in the nation. Shane is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley. He enjoys baseball, golf, camping, cooking, burritos, hole-in-the-wall Chinese food, Cal football and the San Francisco Giants. Attention Coach Alberta: Shane is a slow-pitch softball player.
He starts Nov. 1.
Please join me in welcoming Shane.
