I found this new concept pretty interesting and have been wondering if it is really worth all the excitement it has been generating. Nokia looks to be involved in one of the first location-based technology vending machines. You may think that it seems to be a cool match, but will the connection last beyond its introduction at Social Media Week?
In celebration of Social Media Week, the mobile brand released the video below demonstrating how such a vending machine works with a location based concept. To try it out, all you had to do was check in to the machine on Foursquare using the #NokiaConnects hashtag, share it to Twitter and then collect your prize. In essence, you got a prize for giving Nokia a try for doing some of its social media marketing.
The gimmick like this has been done before. You might recall a similar idea where a billboard in Germany was promoting dog food that was dispensed when you checked in with Foursquare. Another time Pepsi demonstrated a machine this year that allowed people to send free drinks to their family or friends via text messages.
All in all, I like the concept of using social media tools to promote a brand in a simple but unique way. These ideas can be used as birthday party entertainment, as fundraisers and anywhere there is an event. I hope you enjoy the video.
