NY Times Shifts David Leonhardt to Op-Ed

The Times vet gets a new role.

David Leonhardt, most recently editor of The New York Times’s data-driven site The Upshot, has been named an associate editorial page editor and op-ed columnist.

In his new role, Leonhardt will have a print column each Tuesday and contribute regularly online. His new column will debut early next year.

“He [Leonhardt] will help us think through our strategy and execution on digital, with an emphasis on visual elements,” wrote Times op-ed page editor Andy Rosenthal and executive editor Dean Baquet, in a note to staffers. “He also will be a cheerleader in our department on these issues and an ambassador to the rest of the organization.”

Leonhardt has been with the Times since 1999. Before helping launch The Upshot, he served as the Times’s Washington bureau chief.
