“Democracy Now” host Amy Goodman is suing the cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis for mistreatment during the 2008 Republican National Convention. Goodman and two of her producers were arrested for “interfering with a peace officer” while covering the event, despite prominently displaying their press passes. Charges were eventually dropped.
The complaint says Goodman suffered scrapes cuts and bruises on her face as a result of her treatment by police. Fellow “Democracy Now” journalist Sharif Abdel Kouddous suffered chest pains for weeks after being slammed into a wall by police while he was handcuffed.
“When journalists are arrested, that has a chilling effect on the functioning of a democratic society,” Goodman told the website Truthout. “We shouldn’t have to get a record to put things on the record.”
