People Adds CelebWatch News App to Subscription Plan

New app has customizable news feeds

People magazine is trying to capitalize on readers' obsession with celebrity news and keep its title as Time Inc.'s cash cow with a new app that makes it easy to follow the every move of their favorite Hollywood stars.

Priced at 99 cents a month or $9.99 a year, CelebWatch combines a live newsfeed, photo galleries, celebrity database, and Twitter feeds. Users can also personalize their newsfeeds to follow specific stars and receive push notifications when someone’s name pops up in the news.

CelebWatch is the also first app to be included in People’s All Access subscription plan, which makes it free for print and digital subscribers. (Print subscribers pay $116 per year, which includes full access to People’s digital editions, while a digital-only sub for the iPad or Nook costs $9.99 per month.) The app’s launch sponsor is Cotton Inc., which will appear in snap banner ads throughout the app and sponsored tweets in the app’s Twitter feed.

CelebWatch replaces People’s Celebrity News Tracker app, which was launched in 2009 and is now being phased out of the iTunes store. The previous app was also a news and photo feed, but without social and customizable aspects.
