Pinterest teamed up with some of the top creators on its platform on the Make a Statement Mask challenge, in collaboration with 72andSunny, aimed at encouraging Pinners to wear face masks during the coronavirus pandemic by turning those masks into vehicles of self-expression.
Creators including Archel Bernard, Gigi Burris, Kerin Rose Gold and Safiya Jihan designed one-of-a-kind masks, which were featured under Pinterest’s Today tab, along with instructions on how to follow suit.
During the first two months of the pandemic, searches for do-it-yourself mask basics exploded on Pinterest, with easy mask DIY up 21 times from normal levels and DIY face mask sewing pattern with filter up 23 times.
Pinterest said there have been 36 times more boards created for fashion face masks, with upticks including blinged out face mask (57%), gothic mask (two times), mask embroidery design (8.5 times) and tie-dye mask (7.5 times).
The company also detailed the mask examples provided by its creators: Bernard created a mask for allies and activists so Pinners could “take a stand in what you believe”; Burris went with a millenary veiled mask; Gold’s mask was inspired by Salvador Dali’s Ruby and Pearl Mouth Brooch; and Jihan opted for a colorful and metallic mask to celebrate cultures from around the world.
Pinterest said in a blog post, “Face masks are becoming more than a functional utility—they’re an essential style statement. And as the global pandemic continues to evolve, face masks will remain an important wardrobe staple.”
