Pinterest’s Pin It Button Is Now a Save Button

Pinterest announced in a blog post by product manager Steven Walling that the Pin It button is now the Save Button, both inside and outside of Pinterest.

According to Walling, the motivation behind the change is making Pinterest easier to understand for its users outside of the U.S., which now encompass more than one-half of its total user base.

Pinterest also launched a redesign of its Pins, with Walling saying in the blog post:

Along with our new Save button, we’ve also improved the Pins themselves. Now you can see all the boards people have saved the Pin to across Pinterest, giving you even more places to find fresh ideas.


Pinterest said in an email to SocialTimes that there are more than 150 million Save buttons around the web, including on destinations such as Amazon, Walmart, Home Depot and Nordstrom.

And Walling wrote in the blog post:

Now that more than one-half of people who use Pinterest are from outside of the U.S., we’ve been working harder than ever to make sure our application and website are easy to use no matter where you live or what language you speak. Unfortunately it turns out that the notion of “Pinning” ideas doesn’t always resonate with everyone around the world.

So we decided to test what would happen if we swapped our Pin It button for the more utilitarian Save instead. We were amazed by just how many new Pinners started saving ideas on Pinterest, especially people from outside of the U.S.

In spite of the impressive numbers, we still really struggled with the decision to make the change. We have a lot of love for our Pin It button, which has served us well for so long. But the most important thing is for Pinterest to feel welcoming to everyone, and that’s why ultimately we went with the more understandable Save.
