In celebration of Pokemon Day on February 27, Niantic launched a limited-time update in Pokemon Go. From now until March 6 at 1 P.M. PST, players will have the chance to encounter special Pikachu wearing festive party hats as they play the game.
Like the game’s holiday Pikachu, these Pikachu will keep their party hats even after this event ends, but once the event is over, players will no longer be able to capture them.
In a blog post, Niantic encouraged users to share pictures of the special Pikachu they encounter on social media:
We want to see how you’re celebrating this Pokemon Day. Use the Pokemon Go AR Camera to take pictures of the special Pikachu you encounter and share them using #PokemonDay.
This update follows the recent release of over 80 new Pokemon in Pokemon Go. Both updates could inspire previous players to return to the game, which is good for companies like Starbucks and Sprint, which have partnered with Niantic to turn their real-world locations into in-game PokeStops.
Many companies have attempted to capitalize on the game’s massive popularity since it launched last July. For instance, Zipcar previously allowed Pokemon Go players in Boston to receive a free ride that would take them to PokeStops around the city.
