Politico Is Expanding…Everywhere

All 50 states and lots of international capitals by 2020.

PoliticoLooks like Politico’s expansion this year into Brussels, New Jersey and Florida was a mere dry run for a far more ambitious plan by the organization to create a presence in all 50 states as well as a significant number of capitals around the world.

In an email to staff obtained by Huffington Post’s Michael Calderone, Politico CEO Jim VandeHei and editor in chief John Harris describe the organization’s goal of maintaining a “presence in every capital of every state and country of consequence by 2020,” painting the plan not only as the aims of an organization seeking rapid growth but as a model that “can save journalism in state capitals and spread it in new countries.” Statehouse coverage, Calderone notes, “has dropped precipitously along with the decline of the newspaper industry.”

In the email VandeHei and Harris put the number of current Politico editorial staff at 300, and claim the plan will give Politico more political and policy journalism staff members “in Washington, Europe and state capitals than any publication in the world,” and will double the number of high-level editorial staff.

VandeHei and Harris plan to expand the organization with “authentically smart coverage” and scoops as the organizing principle while maintaining its “defiantly nonpartisan” approach.
