RD Recap: Austin Beutner Out at the LAT; Reuters Adds 3

The latest media hirings and firings.

The Los Angeles Times loses publisher Austin Beutner. “The firing is an unexpected one, though one built on long-brewing differences between Beutner and his boss Tribune Publishing CEO Jack Griffin,” Politico’s Ken Doctor reports. “It also follows quickly on Tribune Publishing’s rejection of overtures from a would-be buyer for the Times, an acquisition that would have taken the Times private. The firing and sales overture rejection are not unrelated.” Beutner had been on the job for about a year but rumors are flying that he wasn’t a “team player,” a quality that didn’t sit well with Griffin. Tim Ryan, currently publisher of the Baltimore Sun, might be next in line for the LAT job, although no one seems to be totally sure what exactly is going on after the surprising departure of the top business man at the biggest paper on the West Coast…

Sasha Slater takes over as head of magazines at Telegraph Media Group.
