Rodale Exec Jumps to Tabloid Publisher AMI

Fills new post created to manage growth

National Enquirer publisher American Media Inc. is doing some more top-level poaching, this time from Rodale.

Samantha Irwin was a 22-year vet of the health and fitness publisher, most recently serving as ad business director for Men's Health and Women's Health. At AMI, she becomes vp, general manager, a new position.

AMI traditionally hasn't had much in the way of corporate staff, but chairman David Pecker said that the company’s growing digital, international, publishing services and book divisions warranted the position.

“We have a $400 million company,” he said. “We have licensing, we have international, and the digital has really been growing rapidly. And now the publishing services. When you put all of that together, it’s quite a bit. I needed someone here to coordinate everything.”

Pecker has made other big-name hires lately. In November, he brought over Glamour associate publisher Patrick Connors to be vp, publisher of Men’s Fitness. And over the past couple of months, he has hired former Men's Health editor Dave Zinczenko, who was pushed out of Rodale, and fellow Rodale vets Stephen Perrine and Joe Heroun to help reposition Men’s Fitness. Zinczenko has been scouting for a new editor in chief of Men’s Fitness and has been working to put his stamp on the magazine with the June issue, said Pecker. He’s also been trying to help AMI branch out into books.
