Does Metta World Peace Need Some AP Style Help?

Ron Artest got his name legally changed to Metta World Peace just in time for his debut tonight on the ABC-TV juggernaut Dancing with the Stars.

It’s obviously going to be an added bonus to see exactly how the show host, judges and even Peace’s partner refer to him on-air. Although judging by the official DWTS website, they may well just pretend like the legal name change never happened.

But how are the media handling the nomenclature in their lead-up pieces? FishbowlLA took a quick scan of the Internet dance floor today and found all sorts of varying references to number 17’s bizarre new moniker. To cite just a few:

– Local ABC affiliate reporter George Pennachio went with the old standby “a.k.a.;”

– opted to laugh a little, coining the term “Mettamorphosis;”

– straddled a more neutral either-or fence.

Since Metta is teamed on the show with Peta Murgatroyd (pictured), there’s also a good chance for show chroniclers to engage in all sorts of alliteration. If this couple survives into the final stages, we may have to get used to the online phrases like “Metta and Peta keep getting ‘bettah.'” Metta World Yikes.
