Samantha Bee’s Latest Is for All the Nasty Women Out There

"Who is ready to get nasty?"

Samantha Bee‘s ensemble for Monday night’s episode of Full Frontal included a T-shirt that said “nasty woman,” the Donald Trump debate put-down that has turned into a ralling cry, merchandising opportunity and cultural reference point.

And if her sartorial choice didn’t make things clear enough, she asked her audience, “Who is ready to get nasty?” before diving into a debate debrief, including clips of anchors and pundits saying things like, “Donald Trump had a decent 40 minutes.” “The best 30 minutes that he’s had on policy.” “This was sort of a normal debate for the first 25 minutes.”

Bee was not having it.

“No,” she said. “Only kindergardeners get credit for using their inside voices. Our media are so punch drunk from the 16-month Hindenburg explosion of Trump’s candidacy they no longer notice how awful he is unless he hulks out on stage or grabs the foundational principles of our Republic by the pussy. Which he will, if someone sticks the needle in just the right spot,” a reference to Trump’s propensity to be provoked.

Much of the segment was spent criticizing the debate exchange about abortion, debunking myths and exaggerations like partial birth abortion. “Partial birth abortions aren’t a thing!” she shouted through a bullhorn, explaining that “It’s a non-medical term the National Right to Life Committee made up in the the ‘90s for a procedure that was outlawed in 2003 by the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act.”

But what resonated most was not the sting of Bee’s lines, but the facts within.

“Men, if you don’t get why it’s important to have a woman as a major party nominee, check your social media feed. Actually, log in as your wife. You’ll see that all weak women have been sharing deeply personal stories of pregnancies that went wrong,” she said.

But the zinger was coming.

“They were buying T-shirts,” she continued, fanning out her jacket to display her own, “and warming up to a passionate, unapologetic, feminist we haven’t seen since the ’90s. One who stood in a shower of shit and managed to do what 16 primary candidates and the entire Republican establishment couldn’t. Namely, beat this dick-waving Berlusconi knock-off like a little bitch. Her name is Hillary. Ms. Rodham, if you’re nasty.”
