Seattle Magazine Cheers Naked Cover Win

Definitely worth another look

One of the great pleasures of ASME’s annual National Magazine Awards (a.k.a. Ellies), handed out earlier this month in New York, is to peruse the Readers’ Choice selections for best covers. Tabulated via Facebook “Likes,” these winners stand in stark contrast to the selections of the judges.

For example, while Time magazine’s Oct. 24 “Total Meltdown” portrait of President Trump won 2016 Cover of the Year, the masses chose the March/April issue of Cornell Alumni magazine. In support of a cover story about the dangerous levels of fructose in the average American diet, the publication paid granulated homage to Edvard Munch’s famous painting The Scream. As the Cornell Alumni editors put it to ASME: “It was created for the price of a bag of sugar, a packet of toothpicks and a sheet of blue Plexiglass.”

Then there’s the wonderful May/June 2016 issue cover of Seattle lifestyle publication Ville (pictured). The magazine this week is celebrating a Readers’ Choice nod, as well they should. It’s a great cover, garnering the popular vote for Best Sports and Fitness cover of 2016, a category won by ESPN The Magazine. The honor caps a momentous year for the team reflected, Seattle Sounders FC, who won their first MLS championship after it was shot.

There is however, per an entry this week on the team’s official website, a funny caveat. All three of the pictured athletes are no longer with the team:

Valdez signed with Cerro Porteño in his native Paraguay, Mears signed with 2017 MLS expansion side Atlanta United and Zach Scott retired after a 15-year career in Seattle.

For the three players, it’s doubly a Collector’s Edition, marking an unforgettable year in the Pacific Northwest. And for May/June cover designer Charity Mainville, photographer Ernie Shapiro and Seattle Sounders FC director of performance and sports David Tenney, a perfect capper to a championship year.

In thrilling fashion, the Sounders beat Toronto 5-4 in penalty kicks Dec. 10 at the 2016 MLS Championship after a scoreless regular and overtime game. Check out the other 2016 Readers’ Choice magazine cover winners here.
