Showtime is letting nonsubscribers sample full length episodes of several of its top series—free of charge—via its new iPhone app.
The new free application, among the first launched by a premium cable network, offers access to select full length episodes of the Showtime hits Weeds, Nurse Jackie, The Tudors and others, as well as the season premiere episodes of the just-begun new seasons of Dexter and Californication.
In addition to full episodes, the new app, which is powered by the mobile video technology firm Transpera, features sneak previews and behind the scenes clips from Showtime’s various series—as well as original interviews with stars. Plus, Showtime is offering Apple owners a limited, exclusive offer to subscribe to the network for $7.99 per month. Users can click and instantly call Showtime to take advantage of the service.
However, besides serving as a promotional channel, the new Showtime app should provide an alternative revenue stream for the pay cable network in the form of advertising. The company is planning to deliver short pre-roll ads as well as display advertising from top brands on the app, said officials.
