Twitter reported on its Q1 2014 financial earnings, and the numbers have beaten Wall Street estimations almost across the board, except, it appears, where it really mattered: that all-important monthly active users number. Twitter’s revenues for the quarter were $250 million versus analyst expectations of $241.47 million. VentureBeat The company revealed that 78 percent of its total monthly active users are mobile. Moreover, mobile advertising was about 80 percent of total advertising revenue this quarter, for a total of about $180 million in mobile ad dollars. The New York Times Most disconcerting for shareholders is that Twitter made $1.44 in advertising revenue for every 1,000 timeline views, down from $1.49 from its previous quarter. That may be the best marker of Twitter’s ability to make money from its platform, and in the first quarter it was trending down. USA Today Investor sentiment has soured, sending shares tumbling 40 percent. Twitter shares fell nearly 10 percent in after-hours trading Tuesday, to a 52-week low of $38.50, following its first-quarter results on Tuesday. Bloomberg Businessweek Twitter employees have their first opportunity to sell shares on Monday, May 5, which is also likely to depress the stock price. Twitter’s founders and chief executive recently said they have no current plans to sell their shares.

Skype Tuesday announced it is making group video calling available free of charge on Windows desktop, OS X, and the Xbox One. At the same time, the company is also promising it will enable group video calling across all platforms at no cost “in the future.”
