Speaking of Evan Williams…

Twitter co-founder Evan Williams was asked by Oakland Local and the Public Media Collaborative co-founder Susan Mernit at the 2009 Online News Association conference in San Francisco how he deals with uncertainty, since he has started six companies during the past decade, E.B. Boyd of sister blog BayNewser reported from the event.

Williams’ answer:

I’ve always gotten questions from employees or people I work with saying, “I don’t know where we’re going.” It’s sort of the nature of the game that you don’t know where you’re going. That’s not an excuse for not having a vision about where you want to go. (But) you (also) know your vision is wrong in some ways.

If I wasn’t comfortable with that, I wouldn’t have done some of the things I’ve done…There are probably smarter people who go into more certain territory. I’m attracted to the unknown.

Boyd added that a more complete summary of Williams’ remarks is available from University of British Columbia journalism professor Alfred Hermida.
