Rochester is All Over This Week’s Sports Illustrated

We'll have whatever the Western New York Flash are having.

SIWomensSoccerCover_TeamUltimately, sports is all about the numbers.

Consider the subscriber cover for this week’s Sports Illustrated issue. Pictured, left to right, are Women’s World Cup U.S. team stars Carli Lloyd, Alex Morgan, Abby Wambach and Sydney Leroux. Per the Democrat & Chronicle, all four have a connection to a local Rochester team:

Wambach and Lloyd played for the Western New York Flash in 2013 and 2014. Morgan was on a championship Flash squad as a rookie in 2011 and Leroux was acquired by WNY earlier this spring in a trade for the rights to Wambach, who chose not to play on a pro team this season to focus on the World Cup in Canada.

There are also, for this issue, four individual regional newsstand covers, each featuring one of the four players. In the case of the wonderfully headlined one for Wambach (Abby’s Road), four is the additionally magic number:

The 1998 Our Lady of Mercy High School graduate is the fourth Rochester-area native to grace the cover of SI.

As noted by D&C reporter Jeff DiVeronica, the others are skier AJ Kitt (January 1992), runner Dick Buerkle (February 1970) and one-time college football star Don Holleder (November 1955).
