Steampunk Adventure Game 80 Days Launches on Android

80 DaysFollowing a release on iOS devices in July 2014, Inkle’s 80 Days has launched on Android phones and tablets. The game is set in an alternate-history version of the Jules Verne classic Around the World in 80 Days, and sends players on a real-time race around a steampunk world. Users play as Phileas Fogg’s French valet Passepartout, and must use their “strategy and cunning” to help their boss safely travel around the world.

The text-based adventure game sees players departing from London and traveling around the world on one of many possible routes across both sea and dry land. Players can explore locations to open up new potential travel routes (this also costs time), or pick up travel brochures that unlock new routes in bulk.

Players carry a suitcase of belongings with them from city to city, and can sell these items to make additional money (helpful in negotiating travel fairs and departure times), or fill their suitcase with new items in available markets.

As players explore, they unlock more of the story, with this Android version of the game coming equipped with a new arctic route of travel locations, along with around 30,000 words of new text in the storyline (this path is available as a free update to iOS players). While some of the story is set in stone, many other portions can be customized by the player in a choose-your-own-adventure style. Experienced from a first-person perspective, players can craft Passepartout’s journey by choosing his thoughts, his next actions and more, depending on the available options.

While much of the travel between locations is sped up to save time, a live multiplayer feed shows the journeys of other players as they happen the map. Players can share their journeys with their friends, and load others’ journeys to race them around the globe. With over 100 cities to visit in all, the game offers multiple replay options, as players work to discover the fastest route to complete their quest.

80 Days is available to download for $5 on Google Play and the Amazon Appstore. The game has sold almost 100,000 copies since its release on iOS earlier this year.
