One of Super Bowl LI’s Best Storylines Has Already Been Written

It’s an eerie and seemingly predestined coincidence. When Atlanta Falcons star wide receiver Julio Jones takes to the field Sunday for Super Bowl LI, wearing a bracelet honoring the memory of Savoy Jones, it will mark four years exactly since the 15-year-old Alabama high school student died in Dothan.

Local paper the Dothan Eagle covered the Emmanuel Christian student’s untimely Feb. 5, 2013 passing, which came about shortly after he collapsed on a basketball court. Today, on page D1, the paper shares a feature about how Julio Jones came to wear the bracelet.

Savoy’s parents presented the keepsake to the wide receiver following a recent regular season game, but it was only when they saw a photo of the NFC Championship trophy presentation that they realized the bracelet was being worn by the NFL athlete:

Chris and Sophia’s daughter, Christina, was a University of Alabama football hostess for recruits when Julio Jones was a prep standout. Jones was paired with Christina on a visit and the two became lasting friends. Through Christina, the whole family got to meet and know Julio.

Julio invited Chris and Sophia to the Falcons game against the Chiefs as a gift for their 35th anniversary, according to the initial story of the connection between Julio and the family that was written by Jay Busbee of Yahoo Sports and published on Monday.

Wide receiver Jones connected several times during Savoy’s lifetime with the happy-go-lucky teen. So… watch for a glimpse of that blue bracelet on Sunday. The item features the name Savoy Jones, together with the numbers of his former basketball and baseball jersey numbers (10, 23) and the inscription “Nothin’ but His Love.”
