The Atlantic and Univision Digital Team Up for New Spanish-Language Site

It's the second such partnership for Univision Digital.

The Atlantic and Univision Digital are teaming up to create CityLab Latino, a Spanish-language digital publication that will complement, Atlantic’s city-focused site. The publication is expected to launch in early 2016 with editorial staff in both Washington and Miami and will live on

In a note to readers on, editor Sommer Mathis described the impetus for the Spanish-language site as stemming, in part, from reader interest in Spanish-language coverage of CityLab’s topical areas:

Since we first launched CityLab in 2011 (back then known as The Atlantic Cities), we’ve consistently heard from our Spanish-speaking readers that they want more coverage of the ideas and urban issues CityLab cares about—the environment, design, housing, culture, technology, crime, immigration, and more—both in Spanish and centered around the growing global cities where Spanish is spoken. By partnering with, by far the dominant Spanish-language digital platform in the U.S., we’ll be able to do just that.

The site will include both original reporting in Spanish as well as translated versions of content. There are also plans to create events related to the site’s content, according to The Atlantic co-president and COO Bob Cohn. “We also see an opportunity to bring The Atlantic’s experience and success in the events space to this partnership, taking coverage of city-related issues to live audiences in key Univision markets around the country,” he said in a statement announcing the partnership.

This is the second partnership of its kind for Univision Digital, which launched Variety Latino in 2014 with entertainment industry publication Variety.
