The FishbowlDC Interview With Ed Schultz

Say hello to Ed Schultz, host of MSNBC’s “The Ed Show.” Schultz was recently in Washington to attend the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. He seemed to enjoy himself and was even spotted late night chatting away at the MSNBC after party. When it comes to cussing, he’s a simple “sh*t” kind of guy. If there’s one thing in life the lefty talk show host is sure of, it’s that he has no desire to dine with former V.P. hopeful Sarah Palin. Not that she’s knocking down his door, but still, for him, never. Read on.

If you were a carbonated beverage which would you be? Soda water, because I mix it with Tanqueray and tonic. It’s my favorite drink.

How often do you Google yourself? Not very often – about once a month.

Who is your favorite working journalist? [NBC’s] Kelly O’Donnell – and it’s not just because she has red hair.

What’s the worst thing you’ve ever said to an editor (or vice versa)? The list is too long.

Do you have a favorite word? Buckster (nickname for
my black lab, Buck).

Who would you rather have dinner with – First Lady Michelle Obama or Bestselling Author and former V.P. candidate Sarah Palin? Obviously, the First Lady – I think she’d be intelligent conversation. She strikes me as someone who really cares. Well, yeah, more enjoyable than Sarah Palin. I have no desire to have dinner with Sarah Palin. None.

When did you last cry and why? I think that there are some things in life that you can keep private and I think I’ll just keep that to myself.

What word do you routinely misspell? Receive

What’s the name of your cell phone ring? Whatever the standard ringtone is on the Verizon Blackberry Storm.

What swear word do you use most often? Shit

What word or phrase do you overuse? “It is what it is.”

What TV show do you have to watch? The Ed Show – it’s the only way I can get better.

Where do you shop most often for your clothes? I never shop – my wife takes care of all of that.

Who do you prefer for daytime talk, Dr. Phil, Oprah, Tyra or the women of The View? None of the above.

Pick one: Leno, Letterman or Conan? Leno – I thought he did a nice job [at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner]. I didn’t understand all the criticism of Jay Leno. Maybe I’m easily entertained. I really enjoyed him.

Read more about Schultz after the jump. Find out which late senator with whom he’d want to be trapped on an island, and which senator he’d sooner never interview again…

If you were trapped on a deserted island, which public official would you want to be trapped with and why? Ted Kennedy. I just admired his spirit , I admired his fight. I admired his ability to compromise and his ability to focus. I just thought he was one of the greatest senators we’ve ever had. Yeah, I think he’s a survivor. I think he was the guy that never gave up. I thought he was a tremendous. If youÂ’re stuck on an island, he just seems to me to be a guy that would always have a positive word when things aren’t going very good.I knew him a little bit and always just thought he was super positive. I thought his personality was infectious.

Who is your mentor? Jim Adelson, longtime ND broadcaster.

What’s the best advice you ever received in the course of your career? About the time you think you’re the most important person in the building, that is the beginning of your downfall.
