The morning and evening political newsletter space is competitive and crowded, so The Hill is taking over lunch with an afternoon newsletter. Called The 12:30 Report, it’s headed up by Cate Martel, who joined The Hill earlier this month from Politico.
The newsletter, which debuts today, covers the 2016 elections as well as Congressional and White House happenings, plus some occasional New Hampshire news, in a nod to Martel’s home state. “Our thinking process for The 12:30 Report is to create a newsletter that is fun to read. It doesn’t take itself too seriously,” Martel tells FishbowlDC. To that end, the newsletter will feature snippets of food and culture news in addition to politics. Today’s inaugural newsletter ended with this link, which Martel essentially described as a must-watch, and it is legit hilarious.
According to Martel, a midday newsletter occupies a crucial space, touching on the past, present and future of that day’s news. “The 12:30 Report is the only [newsletter] that has the opportunity to fully immerse itself in the news cycle as it’s happening–and will give a good rundown of what’s still to come and where to find the newsmakers on TV and events.”
