In announcing they had chosen unanimously to unionize, The Root’s seven-member editorial staff referenced a quote by James Baldwin to explain their reasoning:”I love America more than any other country in this world, and, exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually.”
It also doubles, whether intentionally or not, as a comment on the elections–on who gets to lay claim to loving this country, and in what ways–as well as recent political protests like Colin Kaepernick‘s decision to take a knee when the national anthem is played at games.
“We have always prided ourselves in being a small, intimate website that competes with bigger publications,” the rest of the statement went on to say. “Because we all believe in the potential, direction and vision of the Root, we want to ensure that we have a voice in the process.”
The staff is being represented by Writers Guild of America, East, who is also representing Fusion as it seeks to be recognized. Both publications are owned by parent company Univision, which is not in support of the effort.
