The Washington Post Goes Prime, Amazon Prime

Amazon Prime members will receive a free 6-month subscription to The Post.

The Washington Post announced that subscribers of Amazon Prime will now be able to enjoy six months of unlimited free access to the Post’s digital edition.

This is the latest in a series of moves by the Post’s owner, Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos, to bring the news organization into the digital age while exposing the Post to an audience who may have never thought of subscribing to the DC newspaper.

“Offering free access to new subscribers through Prime allows us to connect with millions of members nationwide,” said Steve Hills, the Post’s president and general manager.

The integration of the Post with Prime was not completely unforeseen. In May, The Economist quoted one Post veteran employee as saying, “Everyone is expecting it, and we will be disappointed if it does not happen.”

After the first six months of access, Prime members can continue to receive access to the digital edition for a discounted monthly subscription of $3.99 (a digital subscription normally costs $9.99 per month).

Last year, the Post introduced a free app for Amazon’s Kindle e-readers which was rolled out in a similar fashion: Kindle Fire owners received six months of free daily issues of the Post and after that, were charged $1 for the next six months.
