Time Responds to Possible Newsweek Sale By Tooting Its Own Horn

Longtime Newsweek rival Time has offered these words of kindness as Newsweek climbs up on the auction block (via POLITICO’s “On Media”):

TIME continues to be healthy and profitable, and a trusted source of news, reporting and analysis for millions of people in America and around the world in print, online and on the iPad. We had a highly profitable year last year and will have an even more profitable one this year.

Rivalries are rivalries, sure, but that’s not the most gracious thing to say after a competitor falls. As Howard Kurtz tweets, “OK, Time won. But no expression of concern for fellow journos?”

Just for some historical perspective/fun, here’s a 1961 Time article about a then-rumored sale of Newsweek. The article involves a dude named “Samuel Newhouse,” the Astor family and the word “dickering.”
