The Atlantic Pays a Visit to New York’s Trans Models

Newly opened talent agency is the brainchild of Peche Di.

Six months after its inception, Trans Models represents 19 clients. More importantly, in that short time, founder Peche Di has booked work with the likes of Budweiser and Smirnoff.

Perhaps inevitably, there is talk of a reality TV series based on what goes on at the agency. From Terence Cantarella’s report in The Atlantic:

Only two other transgender modeling agencies currently operate in the United States: Transcendence Icon in Boise, Idaho, and the fledgling Los Angeles branch of Thailand’s Apple Model Management. Traditional agencies are increasingly representing transgender models, too, but those opportunities remain scarce. “It’s very limited,” says Vikki Le, a 26-year-old New Yorker originally from Vietnam who was signed by Trans Models in July. “It’s like back in the ’80s when they had one black model on every runway and that’s it.”

Cantarella gets some nice historical perspective from Harold Milton, the former director of Click Models in Manhattan who placed the first transgender model in the pages of Playboy magazine (Caroline Cosser was outed by the media a year after her 1981 spread). The big coming out party for Trans Models may be next February; that’s when Di is planning, for New York Fashion Week, an all-transgender models runway show.
