Tumblr will celebrate its 10th birthday Sunday and, while it may pale in comparison to the opus penned by Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg in honor of his social network’s 13th birthday, founder and CEO David Karp shared his thoughts.

Karp looked back at the pre-Tumblr days of 2006, noting that Google hits for “podcast” had skyrocketed from 100,000 to 100 million in less than one year, Twitter had just debuted and the total number of blogs was doubling every six months.

After four months of writing his own blog on Tumblr, the platform launched in 2007, Karp wrote, shedding earlier potential names Tumblehub and Tumblespot, and today, there are 336 million Tumblr users who have generated 146 billion posts.

Karp also shared his vision for the next 10 years at Tumblr:

Internet culture has become the prevalent, global culture. These networks expose us to new ideas and information but—too often—trap us in bubbles. The world has been compressed, and we are constantly challenged to reconcile our differences.

With so many barriers to digital expression now lifted and nearly all modes of media supported across all platforms, there is now an unprecedented opportunity to dedicate this space to freedom, truth, expanded perspective and positive influence in the world. Tumblr’s focus over the next decade will shift accordingly.

Expression has been and always will be a foundational part of Tumblr—and our roadmap this year will not disappoint—but it is now more urgent than ever to empower positive and productive connections across the communities that thrive here. To create an environment where people are truly safe to be themselves. To ensure that positive discourse rises above toxicity. And to protect the free exchange of ideas, from which truth will emerge.

Karp is also participating in a Tumblr Answer Time session starting at 3 p.m. ET Friday.
