Senator Barbara Mikulski Calls Out Reporter’s Tweet In Real Time On The Congress Floor

Twitter took the limelight in Congress yesterday.

Maryland Senator Barbara Mikulski, chairwoman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, called out a BuzzFeed Politics reporter’s tweets in real time.

Here’s the deal.

Mikulski’s Twitter reference occurred during a Senate committee hearing on cybersecurity.

Rosie Gray, a reporter at BuzzFeed Politics, tweeted a critique of Mikulski and California Senator Dianne Feinstein, who defends the government’s digital surveillance programs, from the press table at the conference:

Gray’s implication was that Feinstein was attempting to keep discussion of the controversial digital surveillance program behind closed doors. She might not have realized that the Senators were reading what she tweeted, live.

“I want to respond to a tweet about me from Rosie Gray,” replies Mikulski. Watch the video clip for the full dialogue:

Gray’s response on Twitter:

100% of U.S. Senators use Twitter. Do you think Twitter has a place in American law-making? Shout out in the comments.
